Mechanical cuckoo clocks are traditional timepieces that use intricate clockwork mechanisms, typically driven by weights, and a pendulum to keep time. They are known for their distinctive cuckoo call, made from bellows opening and closing, that features a wood-carved cuckoo bird emerging from a door to announce the hour.
Mechanical cuckoo clocks were first documented in the mid-17th century, with the earliest known description dating back to 1629. However, the development of cuckoo clocks as we know them began in the Black Forest region of Germany in the 18th century.
If a traditional mechanical cuckoo clock is for you, then you have to decide between a 1-Day or 8-Day mechanical. The metal weights on the 1-Day clocks drop faster and the clock will have to be wound at some point each day to keep it going. The metal weights on the 8-Day clocks drop slower and the clock only has to be wound once every 7-8 days.
Musical mechanical cuckoo clocks have 3 weights, while non-musical ones have only 2. (Each weight controls a different element of the clock: time, cuckoo and music, if a 3rd weight is present.) The musical cuckoos rotate between playing Edelweiss and Happy Wanderer.
